Liverpool new signing Dominik Szoboszlai may have ‘leaked’ the identity of the new club captain ahead of Jordan Henderson’s imminent departure.
Liverpool have now agreed a fee with Al Ettifaq to sell Henderson, who has already agreed personal terms on what has been described by The Athletic as a life-changing contract offer.
The 33-year-old’s departure has left the Reds searching for his replacement as club captain.
Vice-captain James Milner also left the club this summer, with Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker among other Liverpool stars having worn the armband in the past.
And responding to a Liverpool star following Wednesday’s 4-2 friendly win against Karlsruher, Szoboszlai may have dropped a major clue as to who will be the new captain. Szoboszlai “leaks” the Liverpool captain
Van Dijk posted a photo on Instagram after the match with the caption: “Season 23/24 in progress..”
Interviewees included Cody Gakpo, who scored Liverpool’s 2-2 equaliser, while new signing Szoboszlai also kept clear of the post.
In a separate post that Van Dijk replied to, the Hungarian international replied with a C symbol, which is used to mark the captain on team sheets, and a thank you/pray emoji.
Van Dijk took the armband for the friendly against Karlsruher, with many speculating the decision could suggest he will indeed be named club captain.
Szoboszlai’s message could therefore simply be related to the Dutchman wearing the armband during his first-half performance, but it could also suggest that Reds players believe Van Dijk is the right man to succeed Henderson as club captain .
Liverpool have four more pre-season matches, which will take place in Germany, Singapore and at Deepdale Stadium in Preston North End, before the start of the 2023/24 season.
And Klopp’s decision on who to hand over the armband when Alisson and Salah return to action could prove pivotal, with the Premier League season now only starting in three weeks’ time.
