Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke spoke in a new interview with Sky Sports in Germany
Liverpool sporting director Jorg Schmadtke has explained the terms of his contract and hinted at summer transfer plans.
The 59-year-old German was called up to a key position in the club’s backroom in May and has had a challenging start at Anfield.
First on the agenda was to finalize the £35m deal to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton. Shortly after came a £60m nosedive for Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool’s affairs are far from over, with spending next on the list as Fabinho and Jordan Henderson move closer to leaving for Saudi Arabia. A replacement is needed.
Szoboszlai has been signed by RB Leipzig in Germany – and Schmadtke has refused to rule out new Bundesliga signings.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Of course there are always players in Germany who are attractive. So my experience in the market is in demand. Because of course I know a bit about how payment works, how the other party proceeds in the negotiations. “The German market is my home market and of course easier for me. But it’s not like we all have our telescopes on Germany.”
Schmadtke has been given a short-term deal at Liverpool and has explained how that deal could progress.
He said: “We are waiting until the end of August. We have signed an annual contract, but in August we will have the opportunity to discuss whether we are both still safe or not? If someone’s not sure, we’re shaking hands and maybe I’ll get a ticket if I want to come.”
Schmadtke also entered the scope of his role and worked with Klopp. He said: “We [he and Klopp] spoke on the phone beforehand and exchanged opinions, but the division of roles in England is perfectly clear: we have an owner who can have a say in decisions and we have Jurgen Klopp who is not only the coach but also the manager, therefore the decision maker.
“It’s about giving him the best possible assists so he can make the best possible decisions. The most important thing is that you understand your role and everyone sticks to their role.
“That’s why he’s here. No problem, on the contrary: we sit a lot, talk a lot – but we also have a lot of fun.
Schmadtke added: “I’m a sporting director and kind of a service provider.” I try to get things out of Jurgen’s hands so he can focus on his core business. Yet it is clear that in the end it is he who decides.
“The understanding of the role is clear to everyone involved. It is about filtering things out of the individual departments and thus presenting Jurgen with the best possible basis for a decision. Decisions are then made on that basis. “
