Keelon Russell, a five-star quarterback from the Class of 2025, committed to the Alabama Crimson Tide during the early signing period in December. He opted for Alabama over several other prestigious programs, including SMU, TCU, Florida, Ole Miss, Oregon, Texas A&M, and Duke.
Russell is widely regarded as one of the top prospects in his class and has quickly become one of the highest-rated recruits in Alabama’s history. According to 247Sports’ industry-generated composite, he holds the title of the highest-rated signee ever for the Crimson Tide, surpassing former stars like Bryce Young (Class of 2020) and Andre Smith (Class of 2006).
The Alabama football community reacted to this news on social media, with many fans expressing surprise that Russell ranked higher than Young, despite Young’s achievements, including a national championship and Heisman Trophy during his time in Tuscaloosa.
“How is he higher than Bryce?” one fan asked,
while another speculated,
“Is that because his class is more stacked?” Despite the reactions, many fans remained optimistic about Russell, with one stating,
“He’s gonna be special I got a feeling,” and another praising his journey, saying,
“To think he started off as a 3 star. Talk about finding a diamond in the rough.”
“I’ve seen enough, start him,” another fan commented.
Russell is currently ranked No. 2 nationally and is the second-best quarterback in the Class of 2025, trailing only Bryce Underwood, according to On3.
Keelon Russell inks NIL agreement with Panini America
In addition to his signing with Alabama, Russell also signed his first NIL deal with Panini America on January 8.
“Being able to partner with a leader in the sports collectibles space like Panini is exciting. Seeing the quality of the products that Panini produces and all the things they have done for other NIL athletes – I knew they were the right fit for me,” Russell said, as per On3. “I can’t wait to start working with them and seeing my first trading cards.”
Russell had an outstanding senior season at Duncanville High School, where he threw for 4,177 yards, 55 touchdowns, and just four interceptions, completing 69.4% of his passes. He led the Panthers to a 13-1 record this season.
