Chelsea may ‘turn in direction’ of £35million star to replace Mason Mount

Chelsea could tap into the £35million star to replace Mason Mount at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea could consider signing Gabri Veiga to replace Mason Mount at Stamford Bridge, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has told GIVEMESPORT.

Mount appears to be set to exit at Chelsea along with a number of other players.

Mount, a Chelsea academy graduate, is set to move to Manchester United, multiple outlets have reported, including Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The England international made 24 appearances last season so they will no doubt have to replace him.

N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic have already left the club, so there is already a shortage of midfielders at Chelsea ahead of next season.

Now, according to MailOnline, Chelsea are considering a move for Celta midfielder Vigo Veiga, who is valued at around £35m.

The report adds that the West London club have opened talks to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion, so it is clear a midfield signing could be a priority this summer.

Veiga was recently asked about his future at Celta Vigo, admitting it is not something he is currently thinking about.
He said: “I don’t think about my future. I want to live in the present and be with the national team.

What I want is to be at the European Championship, because there is still a definitive list (yet to be defined), and then to win the tournament.”

What did Jacobs say about Veiga and Chelsea?

Jacobs has hinted that Veiga could be seen by Chelsea as a replacement for Mount in the summer transfer window.
He told GIVEMESPORT:

“At this stage I think Chelsea are for Veiga, and if Mason Mount goes to Manchester United they can choose to go in that direction. Manchester City could be there too.”

Would Veiga be a good replacement for Mount? Comparing the two players using FBref’s stats tool reveals that Veiga had a better season than Mount.

The Spanish midfielder netted 11 goals to Mount’s three and also provided four assists to Mount’s two.

Veiga also made more late-third passes and progressive passes while making more progressive grabs and carries.

Although it’s hard to judge Mount’s last season as it was difficult for the midfielder, Veiga is only 21 and still has time to grow.

So if Mount wants to leave, he could be an ideal long-term replacement.
