The Dallas Cowboys are finally making a long-awaited change ahead of their Monday Night Football game against the Houston Texans in Week 11 of the NFL season.
On Thursday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy announced that the team would no longer be using a running back-by-committee approach. Instead, Rico Dowdle has officially been named the starting running back.
This move is one that many who have followed the Cowboys this season felt should have been made sooner. With Ezekiel Elliott showing signs of diminishing effectiveness and recently being inactive due to disciplinary reasons, Dowdle has emerged as the clear top option.
“Definitely, you have to get him the ball. That’s my focus to continue to get him opportunities. He’s the lead back,” McCarthy said, according to Clarence Hill of All City DLLS.
In Week 9, Dowdle rushed for 75 yards on 12 carries, and in the Week 10 loss to the Eagles, he added 53 yards on 12 carries. Additionally, Dowdle has contributed 24 receptions and three receiving touchdowns this season.

NFL News: Trey Lance Makes Strong Statement to Dallas Cowboys Regarding His Future as Dak Prescott’s Replacement
Trey Lance is eager for an opportunity with the Dallas Cowboys after Dak Prescott suffered a significant hamstring injury.
Lance, who was originally considered a potential future option for the Cowboys should Prescott be unavailable, now seeks a chance to step in after Prescott’s injury. The situation has become increasingly critical for head coach Mike McCarthy, as the Cowboys’ season hinges on next Sunday’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. A loss would drop Dallas to a 3-6 record, potentially ending their playoff hopes.
Given the high stakes, one of the key NFL storylines is who will fill in for Prescott, not only for this week’s game but possibly for the rest of the season.
Who is going to replace Dak Prescott?
For the game against the Eagles, Cooper Rush will start as the Cowboys’ quarterback. However, Trey Lance made it clear he is ready should the situation change.
“Last year was a whole different story. Having gone through the whole offseason program and this season up to this point, I feel prepared if that opportunity does happen at some point,” Lance said.
Who will be the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback?
For now, Cooper Rush remains the Cowboys’ starting quarterback for the Eagles game. But if he struggles, head coach Mike McCarthy may turn to Trey Lance. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has suggested both quarterbacks could see action, and Lance responded to that possibility.
“Let’s talk to the coaching staff about that (laughs). I would love the opportunity to get on the field any way I can if that’s what the coaches think is best. I’m highly confident to run this offense. I’m in a real good spot with a full year under my belt,” Lance said.
Ultimately, the coaching staff will have the final say, but as always, Jones’ influence carries weight in these decisions.
