Dawn Staley has constructed something rare in collegiate sports — a sustained dynasty at South Carolina that now commands both championship hardware and the largest coaching salary in the women’s game.
Since taking the helm of the Gamecocks program in 2008, Staley has transformed South Carolina into the gold standard of women’s college basketball. Her most recent postseason run saw the team advance to the national title game in Phoenix, eliminating UConn along the way in the national semifinals before falling to UCLA in the championship. It marked the program’s sixth consecutive Final Four appearance and eighth overall — a run that includes three national championships.
A Salary That Reflects a Legacy
Staley’s new contract places her in a category of her own among women’s college basketball coaches. She is set to earn $4.25 million during the 2025–26 season under a five-year deal signed in March 2025, with built-in annual raises of $250,000 through 2030, before any performance bonuses are factored in.
The gap between Staley and her peers is substantial. The next highest-paid coaches in women’s college basketball are:

Beyond the Sideline
Staley’s impact on the sport stretches well beyond wins and losses. A Tubi documentary titled *The Moment* charts five decades of women’s basketball history, with Staley and South Carolina’s undefeated 2023–24 squad positioned at the heart of the story. The film, directed by Kristen Lappas and Sarah Springer, draws on historical footage, cultural context, and first-hand accounts from some of the sport’s most prominent voices to trace the game’s journey from its grassroots origins to a global stage.
Staley’s coaching journey serves as one of the documentary’s most prominent narratives throughout the film. The Moment is currently streaming on Tubi.
