Lions face uphill battle in head to head Playoff History Against Commanders

Lions have terrible head-to-head playoff history against Commanders

After a week-long wait to learn their opponent in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs, the Detroit Lions are finally set to face the Washington Commanders this weekend. The Lions secured the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye following a decisive win over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 18.

The Commanders, who entered the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, are the lowest remaining seed after a narrow 23-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Green Bay Packers, also a lower seed, were eliminated by the Philadelphia Eagles, losing 22-10.

Although Detroit did not play Washington during the regular season, the two teams have met 47 times throughout their histories, including three postseason matchups — with the Lions holding an 0-3 record in those games.

The first playoff meeting between the Lions and Commanders occurred in the 1982 playoffs, where Washington dominated Detroit 31-7. The Lions were shut out until the third quarter, when they finally scored. A decade later, in the 1991 NFC Championship Game, Washington again defeated Detroit, this time 41-10, although the game was competitive until the second half. The most recent playoff meeting between the two came in the 1999 playoffs, with Washington securing a 27-13 victory, having built a 27-0 lead. This was also the first year without Barry Sanders for Detroit.

While these past encounters don’t hold much bearing on the upcoming matchup, it’s interesting to look back at the history between these two teams. This time around, the Lions boast arguably the best team in franchise history, while Washington has been the surprise team of the playoffs. Despite their underdog status, the Commanders are not to be underestimated, especially with star quarterback Jayden Daniels leading the charge in his sensational rookie year.

The game will take place at Ford Field on Saturday night at 8 p.m. ET and will be broadcast on FOX.

It’s been nothing short of a historic season for the Detroit Lions.

For the first time in franchise history, the Lions have clinched the NFC North title in back-to-back seasons, won 15 games in a single season, and secured the No. 1 seed in the NFC—all significant milestones that are propelling them into the NFL Playoffs with momentum.

As the team prepares for the postseason, star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is celebrating this monumental achievement. On Friday night, he made a standout appearance at the Detroit Pistons‘ home game against the Golden State Warriors at Little Caesars Arena. Sporting his signature “Honolulu Blue” hair, a style he’s been known for throughout his career, St. Brown was seen in a bright blue fade—perhaps the most iconic display of it yet.

The “Sun God” made a splash on the jumbotron, receiving a massive cheer from fans, alongside fellow standout, Jahmyr Gibbs, the Lions’ star running back. It was a memorable moment that captured the excitement of the season.

Both St. Brown and Gibbs were recently named to the Pro Bowl, joined by teammates: Jared Goff (quarterback), Penei Sewell (tackle), Frank Ragnow (center), Brian Branch (strong safety), and Jack Fox (punter).

With the NFL Playoffs set to begin Saturday afternoon, the Lions are now just days away from discovering their next opponent in the Divisional Round. This comes after earning a well-deserved bye week as the top seed in the NFC.
