Liverpool’s transfer target might return six years after Steven Gerrard coached him

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is keen to strengthen the Reds’ defense this summer and it looks like one of his main transfer targets could be to approve a move to Merseyside.

Jurgen Klopp’s transfer request for Turin star Perr Schuurs could go ahead with the Dutchman approving a move to Liverpool.

The Reds have long been linked with a bid for the former Ajax star who appears to have a long-standing interest. They had previously considered moving for him in 2017 when he was just 17 years old.

Schuurs was then a Fortuna Sittard player and was even invited via Merseyside to train with the club’s under-18 team, then coached by Steven Gerrard. He eventually moved to Ajax. It has been claimed that Liverpool remained interested in Schuurs during his time with the Dutch giants.

The Reds were reportedly impressed with him in his two games when they faced Ajax in the 2020/21 Champions League group stage. He said at the time: “Liverpool are interested in me? I’m not busy with that. I want to win trophies with Ajax first and stay here for a few seasons.”

They lost again as the defender sought to join Italian club Turin. He continued his excellent development at the Serie A club and Liverpool continued to follow him. The player’s agent George Gardu has confirmed that the Reds, along with a number of European rivals, have tried to sign him.

“Clubs of the caliber of Tottenham, Liverpool and PSG have all opted for the player,” Gardi said. “Besides Liverpool, Tottenham and PSG, three Italian clubs also wanted Schuurs.”

“Thanks to Turin, I’m sure Schuurs can become a mainstay in the Dutch national team.”

Recent reports suggest Klopp has gone even further to secure a deal by making a personal appeal to his bosses at Anfield.

A deal could potentially cost up to £35m as Schuurs currently has three years on his contract at Turin, having only joined Ajax last summer. The three-time Eredivisie champion played 33 times in his debut season in Turin. Several other clubs have also taken note of his successes.

Leicester have been linked before but seem unlikely to step in now given their relegation to the league last season.

Crystal Palace is also known as admirers.

Should the Reds go through with a move, Schuurs would become the club’s third signing this summer following the earlier arrivals of Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively.
