On Wednesday, the NFL made a significant international announcement regarding the 2025 season, but unfortunately, it isn’t favorable for the Detroit Lions or their European fans.
It was revealed that the Indianapolis Colts will be hosting the NFL’s regular-season game in Berlin, Germany this fall. This will be the league’s first game at Olympic Stadium since 1994 and is part of the German marketing rights granted to the Colts last March.
However, with the Colts playing in Germany next season, one thing is clear: the Lions will not be. Despite Detroit also holding German marketing rights, the team is not scheduled to play in Berlin in 2025.

As a result, Lions fans in Germany will have to wait until at least the 2026 season for the team’s debut in Berlin. Despite their global following, Detroit hasn’t participated in an international game since a 45-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in London during the 2015 season.
While this latest announcement may be disappointing, it’s likely that the Lions will soon make their way to Germany. Not only do they hold marketing rights, but one of their standout players, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, has German roots.
St. Brown’s mother is from Leverkusen, Germany, and she spoke to him in German as he grew up, helping him become nearly fluent in the language, which he has demonstrated in international interviews. Last June, he also visited Germany to promote his youth football camp as part of the NFL’s ongoing efforts to expand the sport internationally.
For now, Lions fans must focus on what matters most: securing a victory in Super Bowl LIX. Fortunately, Dan Campbell and the team are currently FanDuel Sportsbook’s +290 favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy next month.
A Super Bowl win would likely give the NFL even more incentive to feature the Lions in Germany at the earliest opportunity.

Commanders Fans make fun of Lions with Chant After NFC Wild-Card Victory
Washington Commanders fans are riding high after their team’s dominant performance in Sunday night’s wild-card round game, securing a 31-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This marks Washington’s first playoff win since 2005, earning them a spot in the divisional round against the top-seeded Detroit Lions.
Despite the challenging task ahead, Commanders fans aren’t backing down. A viral TikTok video captured the energy, with fans chanting, “We want Detroit!” as they left Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The Commanders will face the Lions next Saturday at Ford Field in Detroit, with kickoff scheduled for 8 p.m.
Much like the Lions last season, the Commanders have become this year’s playoff underdogs after snapping a long winless streak in postseason play. But, unlike typical wild-card teams, the 13-5 Commanders aren’t to be underestimated. With 12 wins in a tough NFC, Washington proved their regular-season success was no fluke, especially with their gritty win over Tampa Bay.
While Commanders fans showed up in force in Tampa, the price of tickets for the divisional game against the Lions is nearly four times higher, making a full-scale takeover unlikely. However, it’s clear that Washington’s loyal fanbase is sending a strong message ahead of next week’s primetime matchup.
