What is the New York Yankees’ plan to replace Gleyber Torres in the leadoff spot?
After seven seasons in New York, Gleyber Torres officially parted ways with the Yankees by signing a one-year contract with the Detroit Tigers on Saturday. While Torres had his flaws, he played a crucial role as a tone-setter for the Yankees in the postseason, and now the team must find a replacement for him.
The Yankees have some flexibility, thanks to Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s positional versatility. However, relying on either D.J. LeMahieu or Oswaldo Cabrera to start every game next season is not a viable option.
Acquiring another infielder is essential, and it’s possible that the Yankees may need to make a trade to secure one.
On Saturday, James Nolan of FanSided suggested that San Diego Padres All-Star Luis Arraez could be a potential fit to replace Torres, though this would likely require another major trade this winter.
“Arraez could be a great fit in New York’s lineup. They already have Judge, Stanton, Bellinger, and Goldschmidt to slug home runs,” Nolan wrote. “Adding a lifetime .323 career hitter to get on base for those guys would be perfect.”
“The 27-year-old has 409 games in the leadoff spot. He’s posted a .323 batting average and a .364 on-base percentage when leading off. With runners in scoring position, Arraez holds a staggering .369 batting average.”
Arraez, 27, has consistently been a strong performer over the past three seasons—batting at least .314, earning All-Star honors, and receiving MVP votes. While not every advanced metric may favor his style, his traditional impact at the plate is undeniable.
The main concern for the Yankees is that Arraez is considered a poor fielder at second base, and New York has already signed Paul Goldschmidt to play first base. Bringing in Arraez specifically to replace Torres could weaken the overall infield defense.
The Yankees face a decision. If Arraez, who carries a $154 million market value (according to Spotrac), proves too costly to retain beyond a season, they will need to find another player to fill Torres’ role.
