The Dallas Cowboys are struggling with their running game, a fact that’s evident to anyone paying attention. After passing on both veteran Derrick Henry and a draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the team’s backfield now features the declining Ezekiel Elliott and the average Rico Dowdle.
While the Cowboys need to find a solid No. 2 wide receiver behind CeeDee Lamb and a run-stopping defensive tackle, their most pressing issue is their inability to run the ball effectively. The burden of the offense rests solely on quarterback Dak Prescott, which is a risky approach this season.
There’s a possibility the Cowboys could trade for a running back, despite the limited options available. If Jerry Jones acts quickly, they might acquire a player who has lost his starting position, which Pro Football Focus describes as a “fairytale” trade for Dallas.
PFF has highlighted Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne as a potential trade target for the Cowboys. With his rookie contract nearing its end and no long-term commitment needed from Dallas, both parties could benefit—Etienne could enhance his value while improving the Cowboys’ running game.
Cowboys linked to potential trade for Jaguars running back Travis Etienne
Etienne, who missed his rookie season due to injury, has rushed for over 1,000 yards and accumulated 1,400 yards from scrimmage in each of his first two seasons with the Jaguars. His rapport with former college teammate Trevor Lawrence has boosted the Jaguars’ offense, but he has struggled behind a weak Jacksonville offensive line.
Though Bigsby is the more powerful runner, Etienne possesses great speed and breakaway ability, especially outside of a basic offensive scheme. While Lawrence has had his ups and downs, Prescott represents an upgrade, and the threat of him passing could open lanes for Etienne.
This scenario could spell trouble for Dowdle, who might see a significant reduction in his workload if Elliott becomes effective in short-yardage situations. Etienne would likely take over as the new RB1. Playing behind Dallas’ superior offensive line could help him regain his production levels from earlier seasons.
Although Etienne alone won’t resolve all of the Cowboys’ issues, he appears to be the top available running back if Arizona decides to pursue James Connor as their quarterback. Etienne’s dynamic playstyle could provide the spark Dallas has been lacking.
