The former Arsenal player and Sport Sky Sports Paul Merson made his prediction for the open of the Premier League of Chelsea against Liverpool on Sunday.
The blues welcome to the part of Stamford Bridge by Jurgen Klopp and will be desperate for the three points to give their fans something to smile after their terrible 2022/23 season.
Merson, however, expects the game to be a draw. In his column for Sportskeeda he wrote: “This game is crucial for both teams and neither of them wants to lose.
“If I were a fan of Chelsea, I would make a draw here. Both teams will try and a draw would be a good result for Chelsea and Liverpool.”
Chelsea and Liverpool have already met in the transfer window this summer.
Both teams are targeting Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo, but it looks like Liverpool are the club that will win the race to sign him.
According to BBC Sport, they have now agreed a £111m deal with the Seagulls to sign the 21-year-old.
Chelsea are not prepared enough for the Liverpool game
Mauricio Pochettino’s side enjoyed a very strong pre-season, beating Brighton and Fulham to lift the Premier League Summer Series trophy.
Although only friendlies, Brighton and Fulham are obviously Premier League sides, so in a way those two wins were still quite promising. Still, one can’t help but think that Chelsea aren’t ready for this game against Liverpool.
They are extremely weak in midfield after the departures of Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, having just lost Christopher Nkunku to a serious injury.
The Frenchman is someone Pochettino would have turned to for this match given his excellent goalscoring record at RB Leipzig.
Nkunku is a match winner so not having him available could hurt Chelsea. With that and the above in mind, Stamford Bridge supporters would likely have a draw at this point.
