Erik ten Hag faults Manchester United players for two things in Real Madrid loss

As Man United continue to look to sign a striker, their current forwards fired empty bullets in a loss to Real Madrid.

Erik ten Hag has once again criticized Manchester United’s wastefulness in the loss to Real Madrid as efforts to sign a striker continue.

United lost 2-0 to Madrid in Houston and have scored just four goals in their four pre-season games so far. Club sources expect a striker to be signed before the September 1 transfer window closes, but Ten Hag has been angered by United’s wastefulness at Houston.

Asked if the performance highlights United’s need for a new goalscorer, he replied: “Absolutely.” Two things: the pressing can be better from the start and score. And I think we need more players capable of dueling.

“We had the situations: it was (Marcus) Rashford, Scott McTominay, (Alejandro) Garnacho, you have to score. It’s always hard to spot…but we work 24/7. We do a lot in the club, all the power to make it happen.

“We never talk about players under contract with another club. We have our goals, we are there 24/7, we are there, with the right player to sign with us.”

United conceded against 10-man Madrid after just six minutes when Kobbie Mainoo had to go off injured. Mainoo left NRG Stadium on crutches and with a protective boot on his left foot.

Jude Bellingham's
Ten Hag contested Jude Bellingham’s goal at the time, but it appeared to have been played into offside by Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Joselu secured Real Madrid’s victory with an 89th-minute volley. “Well, for us it was a bad start, a direct injury for Kobbie Maineus, must go out and then we are in the minority and we immediately admitted a goal,” added Ten Hag. “Offer?
To the other?
Is it very difficult to see.

“But then I think we saw it again, head each, obviously Real Madrid is an excellent team, excellent football players, but we have created some excellent opportunities. We have to be more clinical and score goals in those situations. I think we had a few, three or four really good chances, but we didn’t.

“Though we stayed in the match until the last minute, but we conceded the second. Overall I’ve seen good things and from this we know we’re on the right track against a good opponent, against a complicated system, I’m happy with it.
