Former Lions WR Released by New Team Before Free Agency Starts

Former Lions WR Released by New Team Before Free Agency StartsJosh Reynolds, the former Detroit Lions wide receiver, is officially on the hunt for a new team ahead of the upcoming free agency period next week. According to Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette, Reynolds has been released by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tomasson shared the news on Twitter, stating, “Jacksonville today released WR Josh Reynolds, whom they had claimed after he was waived last December by #Broncos.”

Let’s rewind for a moment. Reynolds joined the Denver Broncos last season on a two-year, $9 million contract after spending three years with the Lions. However, things didn’t go as planned in Denver. Reynolds was only able to play in five games before being placed on injured reserve in early October due to a hand injury. But that’s not all—while on injured reserve, Reynolds endured a shocking and dangerous situation. He was shot in the left arm and the back of his head during an incident in Denver. Thankfully, he recovered from the injuries and was cleared to return to action in November, though he never played another game for the Broncos.

Despite the setback, Reynolds wasn’t out of a job for long. The Jaguars swooped in and claimed him just one day after he was waived by Denver. But even with a fresh start, things didn’t improve much for the veteran receiver in Jacksonville. In his four-game stint with the Jaguars, Reynolds only managed one catch for 11 yards on five targets.

Now, looking back at his time with Detroit, we saw a completely different Reynolds. With the Lions, he carved out a solid role as the WR3 in Ben Johnson’s offensive system. In 2023, he had a career-best season, recording 40 receptions for 608 yards and five touchdowns, playing an important part in the Lions’ deep playoff run to the NFC title game.

Now 30 years old, and with this year’s free agency wide receiver class being a bit underwhelming, Reynolds could have plenty of suitors looking to add him to their roster. One possible landing spot? A reunion with Ben Johnson in Chicago, as the Bears are actively searching for a reliable WR3. There’s also the chance that Reynolds could return to Detroit, especially with Tim Patrick—another veteran receiver—becoming a free agent. The Lions are eager to bring back Patrick after a strong 2024 campaign, but as we know, free agency is unpredictable.

So, the question remains: where will Josh Reynolds land next? The coming days will tell as teams prepare to make their moves in the free agent frenzy. Stay tuned for more updates.
